Why the Emergency Blade in Your Car Key Matters
Modern car keys are clever bits of technology. Many drivers now rely on remote locking and keyless entry every day without thinking twice about it. Hidden inside most remote or smart keys, however, is a small but very important backup. It is called the emergency blade.
At Unlock Auto we regularly see keys where the emergency blade has gone missing or has been removed without the owner realising. It is easy to overlook because it is rarely used, but it is there for an important reason.
What the emergency blade is for
The emergency blade is the mechanical key hidden inside your remote or smart key. It allows you to unlock the vehicle manually if the electronic parts of the key stop working.
Situations where the blade becomes essential include:
• Flat key battery. If the remote battery dies the buttons will not unlock the car.
• Flat vehicle battery. Keyless entry systems will not respond when the car battery is completely dead.
• Remote failure. Sometimes the electronics inside the key stop working even though the blade still works perfectly.
• Signal interference. Certain environments can occasionally stop keyless systems responding.
In these situations the emergency blade lets you unlock the door manually, giving you access to the vehicle so you can change a battery, retrieve something important, or arrange further help.
Why people lose them
Many people remove the blade and forget to put it back, especially when:
• replacing a worn remote case
• having a key repaired
• storing a spare blade somewhere safe
Unfortunately when the remote stops working that is often when people realise the blade is no longer there.
A small part that can save a big problem
The emergency blade does not get used very often which is why it is easy to overlook. But when you do need it, it can save you being locked out of your own vehicle.
If you are unsure whether your key still has its blade it is worth checking now rather than discovering it is missing when you need it most.
Many keys can also have a replacement blade cut and fitted, so even if yours has gone missing it is usually easy to sort out.
A quick check worth doing
Take a moment to check your car key today. If you have a remote or smart key look for the small release button or slider that reveals the emergency blade. Make sure it is still there and fits the door lock properly.
It is a tiny part of the key but it is designed to be your backup when technology lets you down.
